We raised our first pigs from weaners last year and the last four will be going to slaughter later this month. We sent two off last year and they were fantastic - you can taste the happiness in them.
We currently have three Berkshires (smaller pigs best suited to pork - see photograph) and one British Lop (larger). The Lop is the rarest breed in Britain and the Berkshire was the breed of choice of the Japanese Emperor.
Although it seems contradictory you're helping rare breeds to survive by eating them. Not every piglet in the litter will conform to the breeding specifications but they are still wonderful to eat. Buying them for pork provides the breeder with the finances to keep the breed alive - a full grown pig will eat £1000 of feed a year.
We'll be taking our pigs to a small, local abattoir on Friday 22nd January and we'll collect the meat on the following Wednesday and have some of it frozen. Then we'll be going to London for the weekend so can arrange collection there on Thursday 28th (Putney, SW15). If required postage might also be possible.
The following table lists the cuts that we're expecting, estimated weights and price per kilogram.
To Order: Please send me an email at evdb@ecclestoad.co.uk with a list of what you'd like (cut, quantity, frozen or not, phone number). It's first come first served. Payment is cheque or cash on collection. When we get the cuts back from the butcher we'll know the exact weights and let you know the final price.
Whole / half pig: Let me know if you want to do your own cutting or a spit-roast - we'll see what we can do.
Notes: Although three of the pigs are black it is only their hair that is black - the skin is white (some people don't like darker crackling or rind). The pigs have been fed a high quality pig feed and are rare-breed so may be fattier than commercial 'pink pigs'. However the fat is where the flavour is and having always been out in the fields foraging there will be plenty of flavour.
